Persuasion

The two adaptations can hardly be compared, mainly due to the very different interpretations of the respective characters. I liked them both.

Jane Austen - The World of Her Novels

I have recently finished reading this book and would like to recommend it to all Jane Austen fans! Here is a description from the Amazon website:

With a wealth of fascinating details about Jane Austen's life and times, this book brings to life the world of her novels which have given rise to a spate of films and television dramas: the film,Sense and Sensibility, was a major Oscar winner in 1998; Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, was a huge box office success in 1996; most recently Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley was released.

Austen scholar Deirdre Le Faye first gives a meticulously researched overview of the period, from foreign affairs to social ranks, from fashion to sanitation. She goes on to consider each novel individually, explaining in detail its action, its setting, the reaction of public and critics and Jane's own feeling about it. The lavish illustrations, many never seen before, allow the reader to visualize the places and people of the novels. This book is essential reading for students of literature and of social history, and for all Jane Austen enthusiasts who want to gain a new insight into her work.

Northanger Abbey

After the BBC adaption with Katharine Schlesinger I now watched the one with Felicity Jones. Both versions have been done well and I liked them.

Mansfield Park

It does not seem to be easy to make a movie adaptation of this book. The version of 1999 with Frances O’Connor has got too many experimental components to my taste and some ugly scenes (particularly the open sex scene between Maria and Henry, and the torture drawings by Tom) which in my opinion have got room neither in a romantic movie, nor in an adaptation of an Austen novel. There were also some scenes which do not occur in the novel – obviously they added some parts of Jane Austen’s own biography to the movie. The BBC version with Billie Piper is more authentic – apart from the fact that Fanny’s stay with her own family which plays an important role in the book is simply left out. However, the scenes come too fast after one another and I suppose it is hard to follow the movie if one hasn’t read the novel.

Emma

Meanwhile I have watched the first of the six DVDs, the adaptation of Emma. I cannot really tell whether it is better than the one with Gwyneth Paltrow. In any case I preferred Sophie Thompson over Prunella Scales as Miss Bates – she was so much wackier in this role :)

Austen DVDs

I got these DVDs for Christmas :) As I have already watched other movie adaptations of all Austen novels I wonder what these will be like!
