Jane Austen's House 3

After visiting the house and garden it is very worth taking some time to visit the small shop, too. Apart from DVDs and books they offer for example music books with contemporary pieces and movie sound tracks, cups, shopping bags, tea towels, key rings, stationery, etc. etc. We were a little worried that we did not have enough cash with us on that day, but after finding out that they also accepted Mastercard, my dear hubby told me to continue shopping – guess he is the sort of man every woman would wish for ;)

Here are some impressions of the house and garden – unfortunately it was not allowed to take photos inside main house.

Jane Austen's House 1

To get there from London is not quite as easy as the description on the House’s website indicates. It is no problem to get to Alton from Waterloo Station. However, the bus X64 departs only once an hour, on weekends not even that “often”. So if you don’t want to wait that long and /or prefer to avoid the 12 minute walk from the bus station to the House you can book a taxi in the office right at the train station (costs around 6 – 7 GBP one way, so it’s not too expensive) and get directly to the destination. If you wish to call a taxi for your way back, the extremely friendly ladies in the House’s shop will be happy to assist you!

Sanditon & The Watsons

Such a pity that Jane Austen wasn't able to finish these to stories any more - otherwise we would have two more of her wonderful novels...

Pride and Prejudice

I like the adaptation of 2005 with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen very much. Being a series, the BBC version of 1995 with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth is, of course, more detailed and really almost perfect :)

Sense and Sensibility

I like both movies. However, the adaptation of 2007 is more detailed and closer to the book.

Persuasion

The two adaptations can hardly be compared, mainly due to the very different interpretations of the respective characters. I liked them both.

Jane Austen - The World of Her Novels

I have recently finished reading this book and would like to recommend it to all Jane Austen fans! Here is a description from the Amazon website:

With a wealth of fascinating details about Jane Austen's life and times, this book brings to life the world of her novels which have given rise to a spate of films and television dramas: the film,Sense and Sensibility, was a major Oscar winner in 1998; Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, was a huge box office success in 1996; most recently Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley was released.

Austen scholar Deirdre Le Faye first gives a meticulously researched overview of the period, from foreign affairs to social ranks, from fashion to sanitation. She goes on to consider each novel individually, explaining in detail its action, its setting, the reaction of public and critics and Jane's own feeling about it. The lavish illustrations, many never seen before, allow the reader to visualize the places and people of the novels. This book is essential reading for students of literature and of social history, and for all Jane Austen enthusiasts who want to gain a new insight into her work.

Northanger Abbey

After the BBC adaption with Katharine Schlesinger I now watched the one with Felicity Jones. Both versions have been done well and I liked them.

Mansfield Park

It does not seem to be easy to make a movie adaptation of this book. The version of 1999 with Frances O’Connor has got too many experimental components to my taste and some ugly scenes (particularly the open sex scene between Maria and Henry, and the torture drawings by Tom) which in my opinion have got room neither in a romantic movie, nor in an adaptation of an Austen novel. There were also some scenes which do not occur in the novel – obviously they added some parts of Jane Austen’s own biography to the movie. The BBC version with Billie Piper is more authentic – apart from the fact that Fanny’s stay with her own family which plays an important role in the book is simply left out. However, the scenes come too fast after one another and I suppose it is hard to follow the movie if one hasn’t read the novel.

Emma

Meanwhile I have watched the first of the six DVDs, the adaptation of Emma. I cannot really tell whether it is better than the one with Gwyneth Paltrow. In any case I preferred Sophie Thompson over Prunella Scales as Miss Bates – she was so much wackier in this role :)

Eine großartige Schauspielerin - A Great Actress

Miss Bates sehen.

Actress Sophie Thompson caught my attention immediately when I watched “Emma” (with Gwyneth Paltrow) and “Persuasion” (with Amanda Root) for the first time. In “Emma” she is wonderfully wacky in the role of Miss Bates and in “Persuasion” she is just as wonderful playing Anne Elliot’s egocentric and hypochondriac sister Mary Musgrove. What I didn’t know until recently, though, was the fact that Sophie is the younger sister of Emma Thompson who of course is well-known in her role as Elinor Dashwood in “Sense and Sensibility” of 1995. Below you can watch scenes from “Persuasion” and “Emma” in which Mary Musgrove and Miss Bates are appearing.

Bollywood

One of our sponsored girls in Armenia wrote to us that she likes to watch Indian movies (Bollywood, of course *s*). As I had not known much about this movie genre until now, even though they seem to be very popular all over the world, of course now I had to become at least a little acquainted with them – with the help of YouTube. Among others I found “Bride and Prejudice”, and this title for the movie is no coincidence as you can easily see when watching the trailer ;)

Last Friday Hermann and I watched a play in an amateur theatre. The play was located in France during the era of Louis XIV who also appears in one scene. The costumes had to be created accordingly and for this little theatre that is done by a lady who is 78 years old meanwhile – in my opinion she did a marvelous job and that’s why I’m showing you the most beautiful costumes here!

Grease 2

With this movie I connect a special memory: the first time I watched it was in a cinema on the north-west coast of England (was it Preston or Lytham-St. Anne's? - I don't remember). This was during a student exchange in summer 1982. A girl named Katherine had stayed with our family and then the entire group was taken to England where I stayed with Katherine and her parents. It was very nice, we visited Blackpool Pleasure Beach with the entire group, and Katherine and her mother took me to Chatsworth. In 2005 Chatsworth became one of the two locations for "Pemberley" in "Pride and Prejudice" with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen - but of course nobody knew it at that time ;) I just wonder how I got from "Grease 2" to "Pride and Prejudice" now - but I think the two stories are a little alike...
