North & South 2

Thanks to Simone who kindly lent me the DVD I was able to watch the movie already :) It is very well made and –apart from some minor scenes – close to the book.

North & South

This movie is on top of my wish list at the moment. The book by Elizabeth Gaskell is definitely worth reading!

Etwas Fernseh-Nostalgie - A Little TV Nostalgia

Lassie, Flipper and Daktari were three of the TV series which I used to watch as a child. The episodes were so exciting that my brothers and I often hid behind the sofa or other furniture, because we couldn’t stand it any more. But of course that didn’t stop us from watching the following episodes ;)

Pride and Prejudice

I like the adaptation of 2005 with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen very much. Being a series, the BBC version of 1995 with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth is, of course, more detailed and really almost perfect :)

Sense and Sensibility

I like both movies. However, the adaptation of 2007 is more detailed and closer to the book.

Persuasion

The two adaptations can hardly be compared, mainly due to the very different interpretations of the respective characters. I liked them both.

Northanger Abbey

After the BBC adaption with Katharine Schlesinger I now watched the one with Felicity Jones. Both versions have been done well and I liked them.

Mansfield Park

It does not seem to be easy to make a movie adaptation of this book. The version of 1999 with Frances O’Connor has got too many experimental components to my taste and some ugly scenes (particularly the open sex scene between Maria and Henry, and the torture drawings by Tom) which in my opinion have got room neither in a romantic movie, nor in an adaptation of an Austen novel. There were also some scenes which do not occur in the novel – obviously they added some parts of Jane Austen’s own biography to the movie. The BBC version with Billie Piper is more authentic – apart from the fact that Fanny’s stay with her own family which plays an important role in the book is simply left out. However, the scenes come too fast after one another and I suppose it is hard to follow the movie if one hasn’t read the novel.

Emma

Meanwhile I have watched the first of the six DVDs, the adaptation of Emma. I cannot really tell whether it is better than the one with Gwyneth Paltrow. In any case I preferred Sophie Thompson over Prunella Scales as Miss Bates – she was so much wackier in this role :)

Austen DVDs

I got these DVDs for Christmas :) As I have already watched other movie adaptations of all Austen novels I wonder what these will be like!

Emma Award

I received the Emma Award from Elise – thank you :) According to my usual policy I will not nominate any sites as I take the award “personally” and also do not want to make anybody feel obliged to do the same. On the right hand side you see those blogs which I consider worth reading and actually I should have nominated all of them ;)

The fairy tale movie „Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella“ is being shown on several channels of German TV every year around Christmas. The movie which had been made in 1973 in the former Eastern Block countries Czechoslovakia and GDR achieved cult status also in West Germany long before the fall of the Iron Curtain. The story is not exactly like the one of the Brothers Grimm, but that does not really matter – on the contrary! I have loved this movie since it had been shown on German TV for the first time, and I was only in elementary school then :)

Eine großartige Schauspielerin - A Great Actress

Miss Bates sehen.

Actress Sophie Thompson caught my attention immediately when I watched “Emma” (with Gwyneth Paltrow) and “Persuasion” (with Amanda Root) for the first time. In “Emma” she is wonderfully wacky in the role of Miss Bates and in “Persuasion” she is just as wonderful playing Anne Elliot’s egocentric and hypochondriac sister Mary Musgrove. What I didn’t know until recently, though, was the fact that Sophie is the younger sister of Emma Thompson who of course is well-known in her role as Elinor Dashwood in “Sense and Sensibility” of 1995. Below you can watch scenes from “Persuasion” and “Emma” in which Mary Musgrove and Miss Bates are appearing.

Es ist Zeit... - It's Time...

Here I am again :) After having been absent from this blog for more than one month it is time to return. During the past weeks I have “collected” some beautiful things which I would like to present to you here by and by. For now here is a lovely song from one of my favorite musicals, “My Fair Lady” – of course in the version of 1964 with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison :)

Bollywood

One of our sponsored girls in Armenia wrote to us that she likes to watch Indian movies (Bollywood, of course *s*). As I had not known much about this movie genre until now, even though they seem to be very popular all over the world, of course now I had to become at least a little acquainted with them – with the help of YouTube. Among others I found “Bride and Prejudice”, and this title for the movie is no coincidence as you can easily see when watching the trailer ;)
